There is so much confusion and so many misconceptions which abound on the topic of "ionic" and "covalent" bonding. And some of it has to do with the relative strengths of the bonds. This is one area where you cannot make general statements that one type is stronger than another. It all depends, but generally, bonds with greater covalent character tend to be stronger. The strongest of all bonds occurs in diamond where carbon atom is bonded to carbon atom with 100% covalent bonds.
