Why does Macbeth lie to Banquo in act 2 scene 1 when he tells him he doesn't think of the witches?

he doesn't want banquo to become suspicious of him. don't forget that this is just before macbeth kills duncan so he doesn't want anyone to think he has done anything wrong.
