I have a gerbil, and he likes to rearrange his cage. he hides his food, and never eats it. what do i do?

my gerbils name is felix. i tried to get him a friend, who i named malcom, and he bit felix. i returned malcom because felix was really hurt:( should i even try to get a second one again? or just have one gerbil?
